Straddling culture and traditions in Sicily

A horseback riding holiday experience that will allow you to discover an ancient Sicily rich in history. Riding our best travel companion among uncontaminated nature, culture and traditions, delighted by genuine food cooked in a simple and expert way.
Guests of the Azienda Agricola Traina, in the heart of the Sicani Mountains, an ideal place for horseback riding among mountains and hills along natural springs and streams, where you can find peace and harmony.
The horses and ponies with which we will share our treks are bred and trained here. This week you will not be “just” guests, you will become part of the family on the farm, where you can feel at home, enjoy excellent food (and excellent wines), all strictly local and seasonal! On horseback we will explore the most evocative places of this internal Sicily, between the lush nature areas and the typical alleys of the ancient villages, through cultural experiences and meetings with their inhabitants and their stories.

Equipment:

We recommend bringing your own cap, water bottle, pouch, cocoa butter and sunscreen for the Sicilian climate!
We will provide saddle pads with pockets and the possibility of having a cap and whip (IF NECESSARY) for those who request it.

Clothing: Clothing suitable for the various climatic conditions relating to the different seasons is recommended. Layers in case of colder temperatures in the mountains or warmer in coastal areas; to any windy and/or rainy days. We also recommend comfortable shoes for walking (e.g. trekking shoes, preferably waterproof) and socks suitable for the various seasons.

Additional Information:

For the week, good experience of handling the horse outdoors at three gaits is required and suitable and comfortable clothing is recommended for long periods in the saddle, suitable for possible seasonal temperature variations.
For insurance coverage it is necessary to issue a health certification.
All meals are based on local products, lunch will sometimes be organized as a picnic by our staff and dinner on the farm.

DAILY PROGRAM

Welcome to Palermo, meeting in the afternoon and overnight stay

Arrival independently in Palermo and meeting at the hotel in the late afternoon (around 6.30 pm).
All the participants meet and get to know each other for the first time with Francesco and Anna from Sikani Horse Trek who will take you to dinner in a typical restaurant in the city where you can finally get to the heart of the stories and atmospheres.
Return to the hotel for the overnight stay.

Transfer to the farm, we know horses

After a good Sicilian breakfast, we will move with a minibus towards Prizzi where we will reach the Traina agricultural company (about 2 hours).
Once we arrive we will be welcomed with a good aperitif (in Sicily any excuse is good to eat!!!).
We settle into the room and go to meet the farm and the horses.
Lunch and relaxation.
In the afternoon we will do our first test ride to test our horse and the Sicilian country roads.
Dinner and overnight stay on the farm.

Horse trek and cooking class

Waking up in the countryside and having breakfast all together in the company.
We prepare for our first 3 hour horseback ride then return to the farm for lunch.
Everyone can relax afterwards as they prefer (no rush here!!)
In the afternoon we will go to Palazzo Adriano, a delightful village near the farm, where we will have our cooking lesson with a local pastry chef.
Dinner and overnight stay.

On horse all day

Today we will explore one of the natural reserves of the Sicani Mountains.
We will leave well fueled after a rich breakfast and have lunch in the mountains with a hearty and comfortable picnic prepared and set up by our staff in full contact with nature.
We return to the farm in the afternoon and take care of the horses to cuddle them and feed them after their company during the day.
Relax!

Between history and culture

Today includes an excursion of approximately 3 hours on Monte Hippana, home to an ancient Greek city, which millennia ago was an important reference for trade between the cities of Palermo and Agrigento.
Lunch in the company and relaxation.
In the afternoon we will move to the town of Prizzi to learn about its ancient and contemporary history.
Aperitif in the intimate Totó cellar!!
Dinner and overnight stay.

Horse trek, hermitage of Santa Rosalia and theater of Andromeda

After breakfast we will enjoy the our last horseback ride with a delicious picnic in the mountains.
After having arranged the horses and harnesses we will have the opportunity to rest and then move towards Quisquina, an area of the Sicani Mountains famous for the story of Santa Rosalia, Patron Saint of the City of Palermo.
We will visit the ancient Hermitage dedicated to her and the evocative Andromeda Theatre, conceived and strongly desired by the shepherd and artist Lorenzo Reina.
Once back at the company we will have dinner together and organize a moment dedicated to saying goodbye before leaving the next day.

Departure

Brunch and departure at 10.00 with transfer to Palermo airport.
When booking your flight, keep in mind that the journey to the airport takes about two hours;
